Evaluation
Think B4U Drink was evaluated in 2004. The study found that after one
year of roll out, Think B4U Drink was making a solid contribution to
educating young people about alcohol in Grampian.
The evaluation report is
available to download, but the key findings were:
- Think B4U drink is an opportunity for young people to discuss experiences
openly and honestly with no fear of reprisal. The game encourages
objective and non-judgemental discussion, and is a safe environment
for young people.
- Think B4U drink gives young people the chance to identify with one
another, sharing experiences and responsibilities in a powerful way.
- The situations and scenarios in Think B4U Drink closely reflect
young people's environments and experiences, allowing them to test
their own and their peers decisions and behaviour.
- Young people are empowered by Think B4U Drink. Skilled Gamesmasters
are pro-active in encouraging them to own their decisions, and practice
decision making skills.
- The need for early intervention to pre-empt alcohol use is clear,
and Think B4U Drink may provide the kind of basic intervention required
for some young people. It is important that the game is played with
younger age groups, even though they may not have personal experience
of drinking and may be unfamiliar with the situations and concepts
involved.
- Think B4U Drink gives young people the chance to display alcohol
knowledge, compete with each other, discuss alcohol and drinking issues
for real, and to talk through and share the consequences of drinking.
